Quarter-Mile, Sets NHRA Record
Dodge’s burly V-10-powered Challenger Drag Pak set an NHRA record last week, running a 9.43-second quarter-mile with a trap speed of 143.9 mph. Sound fast? The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) thinks so too, noting the pass set a new record for the AA/SA class.
The run was completed by racer Dave Thomas at Atco Raceway in New Jersey. While Thomas is a 30-year drag race veteran, he hadn’t had much time behind the wheel of his ride — in fact, he only took delivery of his Drag Pak car two weeks prior.
“It’s a spectacular car; a turnkey operation,” Thomas said. “We basically added weight bars to make minimum weight, and that was it. On its first ever run, the car [posted] a 9.79 at 137. There are no headaches involved in setting it up at all. It’s neat the factory can make something like this.”
As Thomas alludes to, the 2011 Challenger Drag Pak — unlike previous iterations — is a ready-to-run race machine, built by Mopar expressly for the Stock or Super Stock race classes. A roll cage, safety fuel tank, gutted interior, two-speed race transmission, and a solid rear axle make the car ready for NHRA passes straight from the assembly line, but the real story is the engine: an hand-built, 8.4-liter Viper V-10 engine producing over 600 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque.
Want one? The Challenger Drag Pak starts at $85,512, but since it isn’t remotely street legal, you’ll have to save it for the strip.
